With so many Boeing planes in the skies, Boeing takes its commitment to the environment very seriously.
While air transport currently accounts for two percent of human-produced CO2 emissions, Boeing is working towards carbon-neutral growth and has dedicated more than 75 per cent of its commercial airplane research and development efforts to advance environmentally progressive innovations, such as sustainable biofuel development, renewable energy, noise reduction technologies and air traffic system efficiency.
The world’s first truly sustainable biofuel test flight was successfully carried out in December 2008 – a joint initiative between Air New Zealand, Boeing, Rolls-Royce and Honeywell using advanced-generation jatropha biofuel and traditional jet fuel in a Boeing 747-400.
In Australia, Boeing, with assistance from the Boeing Research & Technology team, is coordinating the company’s biofuel strategy implementation and working with stakeholders to encourage investment in R&D for sustainable biofuels.
